On August 20, 2026, the Federal Social Court ruled that resuscitations in hospitals often do not constitute inpatient treatment – health insurance companies such as Techniker and AOK are not required to cover these in full. Instead, only outpatient emergency flat rates of approximately 50 euros are reimbursed, despite significant material and personnel expenses. This jeopardizes the financing of emergency care and could deter rescue workers from undertaking resuscitations.
