Vattenfall's 254 MW Battery Storage: Energy Transition Turning Point

@ChartRenegade, @pvm_ess_news, Energy-Storage.News

Vattenfall has ordered a 254 MW/1,016 MWh battery storage system with Fluence at the former Brunsbüttel nuclear power plant – operations to begin end of 2028. This is Germany's largest storage project and demonstrates that large corporations need massive storage investments to stabilize electricity grids. RWE is planning 1.7 GW storage capacity in parallel at the former Hambach lignite mine.

Electricity Prices Explode: 16.4% Above 2021, Gas +160% in 9 Months

@MitAktien, @Schuldensuehner, @rebew_lexa, Euronews

German household electricity prices are 16.4% above 2021 levels at ~37-40 cents/kWh, wholesale prices reach €149/MWh – highest level since June 2023. European gas prices have risen from €28/MWh (January) to €74-89/MWh (+160%). The energy transition promise of cheaper electricity has not been fulfilled; instead, grid expansion, storage, and capacity markets are contributing to cost increases.

Grid Charges 2027: +24% to 3.54 cents/kWh Despite €5.5 Billion Federal Subsidy

Amprion, TransnetBW, Netz-Trends.de

Transmission system operators (50Hertz, Amprion, TenneT, TransnetBW) announce 2027 grid charges at 3.54 cents/kWh – an increase from 2.86 cents in 2026 of approximately 24%. Without a federal subsidy of €5.525 billion, charges would rise to 6.52 cents. The massive debt of TSOs (~€50 billion, TenneT alone ~€28 billion) and grid expansion investments are overburdening electricity customers.

EnBW Fast-Charging Leader, E.ON Solar System Shutdowns, Insolvency Risks

@SchmidtisBlog, @42tw1tter1sd3ad, Otter News

EnBW dominates the EV charging network with 8,110 fast-charging points, while Vattenfall fails with the highest prices (€0.49/kWh). E.ON subsidiary Bayernwerk regularly shuts down private solar systems; Otter News investigates what energy corporations knew about climate change. First insolvencies due to energy transition policy have been reported.

Renewables Reach 52.6% Electricity Share, but Storage Infrastructure is Lacking

@Kl_Stone, @CoalDead, SunShine Research, BDEW

Germany generates a record 52.6% from wind power, solar, and biomass (219 GW installed), yet missing storage capacity and demand flexibility endanger supply security. Daily emergency interventions in the electricity grid reach record levels; gas storage delivered historical lows in winter 2025/26. Infrastructure is not growing with generation.

Situation Report

Germany's energy transition is in a critical turning point phase: While wind power and solar reach record shares of 52.6%, the parallel infrastructure (storage, grid expansion, load management) is failing – accompanied by escalating electricity prices (+16.4% above 2021, wholesale €149/MWh) and exploding gas prices (+160% in 9 months). Large corporations like Vattenfall, RWE, and E.ON are investing heavily in battery storage, but also showing first signs of insolvency risks and monopolistic practices (solar system shutdowns). German transmission system operators are accumulating ~€50 billion in debt, while grid charges rise 24% in 2027 – despite €5.5 billion federal subsidy, a systemic failure in cost management. From a security perspective, a vulnerability tripod is emerging: import dependency on gas/LNG (winter risk), central grid dependency on a few large corporations, and missing decentralized reserves.
