1Vattenfall builds 1-GWh battery storage in Brunsbüttel
@ChartRenegade, @TheEnergyMag, @pvm_ess_news, Enerdata Vattenfall awards Fluence Energy a contract for a 254-MW/1.016-MWh battery storage system at the former Brunsbüttel nuclear power plant – one of the largest in Germany. The project addresses the critical storage gap in the energy transition and is intended to secure grid stability through four-hour discharge capacity. Strategic importance for supply security and grid balancing with high wind power generation.
2Electricity prices explode: Gas +160%, annual forward >180€/MWh
@rebew_lexa, @BjornLomborg, @MarioNawfal, Euronews, EnergyPulse European gas prices rose from 28€/MWh (January) to 74€/MWh (October) – an increase of 160%. Germany's annual forward electricity price for 2027 is above 180€/MWh, driven by LNG dependence, Iran conflicts, and storage bottlenecks. Households and industry are paying record prices; Germany's electricity costs are 222% above 2000 levels.
3EnBW opens 960-MW offshore wind farm without subsidies
Enerdata, Baltic Wind, EnBW Investors EnBW brings the 960-MW He-Dreiht offshore wind farm in the German North Sea into operation – Germany's largest offshore wind project, built without subsidies with €2.4 billion investment. 64 Vestas turbines at 15 MW each mark a turning point toward economically viable renewables without subsidies and strengthen Germany's grid stability.
4Energy transition costs explode: €90 billion instead of planned €30 billion
@axel130457, @BlackoutNews_DE, @E_Boeminghaus, Blackout-News Germany's subsidy budget for renewables (planned €30 billion) already exceeded €36 billion by end of September; total annual costs are rising to €90 billion. Grid expansion, battery storage, reserve power plants, and hydrogen infrastructure are driving costs exponentially, while electricity becomes more expensive rather than cheaper.
5Grid fees 2027: +50% without federal subsidy of €5.5 billion
Amprion, 50Hertz, TenneT, TransnetBW, ZfK, stadt+werk The four transmission system operators (Amprion, 50Hertz, TenneT, TransnetBW) report preliminary grid fees of 3.54 ct/kWh for 2027 – but would jump to 6.52 ct/kWh (+84%) without a €5.5 billion federal subsidy. Massive investments in grid expansion (16,776 km planned, only 2,919 km completed) are overloading consumers and endangering industrial competitiveness.
Situation Report
Germany's energy transition is at a turning point: While major investors like Vattenfall and EnBW are pouring billions into storage and wind, cost efficiency is collapsing due to exploding grid expansion, storage, and subsidy costs, as well as geopolitical gas price turbulence. Electricity prices have multiplied in 2026, grid fees are doubling in 2027, and the storage gap remains critical – despite new batteries. From a security perspective, Germany is highly dependent on LNG imports and delayed grid expansion, which endangers supply security and makes industrial decarbonization more expensive.
